Cannedass chats w/ DJ Wes Laga … his real name, not a take on Lady Gaga

                                                          Play this while reading!!!

Cannedass: How long have you been DJ-ing?

Wes Laga: I got into DJ-ing about four years ago, when I entered college. I’d always been into electronic music, actually my father turned me onto it.

Cannedass: Oh really? What was he into? Like Kraftwerk and Devo?

Wes Laga: No, my dad was very much into Kruder & Dorfmeister, Thievery Corporation, Depeche Mode …just very minimal and lounge-y. And he just surrounded me with it at a very young age so I grew up with it. I got into theater music school and my roommate’s friend was a DJ. I always wanted to know what it was like so he showed me what it was all about and I just took it from there. Figured out what was good, what sounded bad.

Cannedass: Who are you inspired by, besides what your dad has gotten you into?

Wes Laga: For me, it started with Bob Sinclar, David Guetta, and just very progressive house..... a lot of progressive house. Then I started getting into electro as I got older… And I do a lot of top 40s in a lot of my mixes. I love top 40, I mean I don’t like to DJ it straight, but when it’s re-mixed it’s just such a different feel. It’s cool to see what someone can make from what society is listening to everyday, and just make it their own.

Cannedass: And what’s your trick for keeping the crowd going?

Wes Laga: Well, I started Dj-ing because my energy level is naturally so high that I needed something to match that, and I love music as a whole. I can’t live without it. And, giving people the opportunity to hear new sounds and to just be creative. Making people dance is a skill; being able to change the vibe, reading the crowd, switching it up, you just never stop moving. For me acting and DJ-ing are similar in that you have control over your audiences’ feelings. You make them laugh, you make them cry… make them dance.

Cannedass: How do you feel about this years Grammy’s and all the attention surrounding the EDM scene?

Wes Laga: I love it! I love to hear what people think about it. For instance, guys like DeadMau5 and David Guetta… there’s a lot of controversy that they’ve gone too mainstream but I think it’s great the direction music is headed in. Now it’s open to a lot more audiences.

Cannedass: So what are you thinking for Peace and Harmony?

Wes Laga: I was actually thinking about it on the car ride here. I think a lot of it will depend on if I have a day or night set. During the day I’d play more progressive vocal house…we’re talking peace and harmony so a lot of beautiful vocal tracks. At night a whole mix of everything mostly electro house and progressive house.

Cannedass: How do you think music can bring peace and harmony to the world?

Wes Laga: I think already it’s started to. I got into this huge argument a few weeks ago, well not an argument... but a conversation,  with a couple people about electronica and what it’s becoming. Electronic dance music, especially the festivals, started, to bring people together. Like, EDM started so people could come together under one roof, under one tent, under one sky, and just share likes, and listen, and cheer. I think it just stopped for awhile and I think people were waiting for it to come back, and I think now that there’s so many more DJ’s and Producers, in turn, there’s so many more people pushing the envelope and so many more people coming together.

Cannedass: Do you have anything coming up? or anything you want to shout out?

Wes Laga: I’m updating my twitter and my fan page on Facebook constantly so if I get a new event I’m always putting it up there. My goal is after college to do more than New York. I’m ready to bring my energy and vibes all across the United States. You don’t need to have a following in this business you just need to have the right skill and a positive message.

Thanks Wes!  Be sure to check out his soundcloud for some awesome mixes some 30minutes plus!

As always, Feel Free to be Free
