Forest Fest

By: Kristen (Twitter: @BiscoAmbassador)

With the rise of EDM, music festivals, and all things hau5 – it’s hard to find a festival so true to a genre’s roots and scene. Then something like Forest Fest – a progressive music, arts, and activism festival - comes around and brings the purest of vibes for festival-goers to share.

Forest Fest started just a mere four years ago and has quite the story. The festival originally was hosted at Forest Glen (hence, the name) in New York with a minimal budget, the first year drawing out 50 attendees and a handful of bands. When year 2 came around, original organizers: Andy Lynch, Brad Gorfein, Micheal Steinberg, Meg Magnolia, Roman Vinnichuck, and Heather Ording decided to make the event even bigger and reached out to local Djs, Bands, and various vendors. The turnout jumped to 300.

After the second festival, still having a minimal budget, Forest Fest decided to make the event a non-profit– something not so common in the music festival industry. Instead of pricing water bottles at $10, like most popular venues tend to do, Forest Fest was a BYO and donated any proceeds to charity.

By the time the 3rd Forest Fest came around, 700 eager campers flooded the field making it very apparent that this festival was catching on like wildfire. However, the festival’s neighbors were not so happy about the noise and scene (that they, of course, negatively painted in the media). After almost being shut down, the show went on – leading to this year’s Forest Fest 4, which is trying to reach 1,000 attendees.

This year, Forest Fest will be a two-day event featuring 26 bands and 3 DJs to perform on 3 separate stages. With the growing attendance, Forest Fest moved to Center for Symbolic Studies in New Paltz, NY and unlike other years, has a designated camping area – as well as – a separate performance area. Accompanying the music will be fire dancers, a hookah tent, t-shirt painting, food and alcohol, and various other vendors.

One of the many Forest Fest organizers, Jonathan Bartz, stated: “The festival has come along way and continues to grow. The amount of talent and creative energy involved from artists and volunteers is overwhelming. We know we are doing good for the community, giving artists/musicians exposure and I am personally proud to have been involved.”

Tickets are still on sale and are $20 at the door. For the full lineup and more information, check out: www.forestfest.us

Freedom Of Expression Music Festival 2

Last year on August 12-14 of 2011 Upstate Productions hosted its inaugural Music Festival called Freedom Of Expression Music Festival or F.O.E. Music Fest. It was set to be held in Pulaski New York. With this being a first year festival Upstate Productions was decided to move it closer to New York City to Sullivan County New York and a town called Barryville. The venue was called Kittatinny Canoe and Campground, right along the Delaware River over looking P.A. and N.J. Upstate Productions chose Kittatinny for its great attractions such as river trips, arcade, pool, paint balling and a dual 300 ft zip-line.

Last year Upstate Productions had head lining artists like Skerrit Bwoy Superstar DJ Keoki and Roots Collider. Freedom Of Expression Music Festival  was unlike any other music festival in the Greater Hudson Valley area. With the motto "Feel Free To Be Free", Upstate Productions did not discriminate when it came to the genres of music. From Punk to Ska, Jam to Rap, House to Dubstep it was all there in a 3 day experience to be remembered. With about 700 attendees through the weekend this small local music festival was set for big thing especially two stages, one being Main Stage which was under a huge 120X60 circus tent and River Stage right beside the delaware river. With a light show for the ages and a sound system that would blow your ear drums if the bass was all the way turned up, the vibes at F.O.E. Music Fest. were incredibly peaceful and loving. Electronic Dance Music is on the rise and with the "Ravers" motto P.L.U.R. or Peace Love Unity and Respect Upstate Productions and the F.O.E. Music Fest. team embraced it and really tried to make the festival just that.

No info has been released about F.O.E. Music Fest 2 but stay tuned here to find out more. and Remember to "Feel Free To Be Free" #FOE2

Digital Dharma Talks Organic Electronica

Digital Dharma is a four piece electro-jamband from Albany (and a lil Brooklyn) with Aaron on Drums, Eli on the Synth, Jesse on the guitar, and Steve on bass. I got to talk to the latter, Steve, on who Digital Dharma is and what they hope to bring to the EDM community.

Cannedass: How do you make all of those wild sounds with your conventional (non-computer) instruments? Steve: Yeah, it kinda sounds like a DJ, right?

Cannedass: It really does. Without revealing too much, how do exactly do you guys do that?

Steve: Well it’s ahh… talent, I guess. Haha

Cannedass: Haha. Talent. Works for me, I believe it!

Steve: I don’t know, I’m not hating on DJ’s, but everybody’s a DJ’s now and anyone can push a button. Not many people are playing in bands. We’re just trying to make an actual live electronica experience with instruments. A lot of people these days are doing a lot of computers. But right now we have no computers, no beat or drum machines, nothing electronic besides our synthesizer. Right now we’re more organic. Not putting much more into it. We have what we have and we make music with it.

Cannedass: And how long have you guys been playing together? Did you know each other before then? Steve: Actually it will be a year this March. Our drummer and our synth player have known each other for a few years, they got to SUNY Albany right now. They found me on Craigslist…

Cannedass: Oh wow, and you didn’t kill them… that’s a good start.

Steve: No, what I do kill is the bass! Haha I murder the bass!

Cannedass: The Craigslist Bass Murderer!

Steve: We found our guitar player on Craigslist as well. He was a good find, a key find. We really got lucky it doesn’t happen very often to find that kinda talent on Craigslist.

Cannedass: When you guys came together did you all have the same idea to make organic Electronic music? Steve: Yeah. We all came together for the same reasons.

Cannedass: Who are you influences?

Steve: We all have different backgrounds so we all have different input on everything. It’s a lot of genres put together. Live electronica dub fusion. But we’re into like, The Disco Biscuits, STS9, The New Deal, and The Guerillas. We’re trying to get a more Shpongle like sound kind of tribal. We put a lot of things together and make it work. It’s always a good time.

Cannedass:You play a lot of live shows I noticed.

Steve: Yeah, we’re working on getting in the studio, getting some stuff out, the sooner the better. We’re really looking forward to playing some festivals this season.

Cannedass: What can we expect Tonight at the Dry Dock?

Steve: A lot of energy. We bring a lot of energy and I like to dance so I’m pretty much dancing while I play. I may be in the crowd at some point just dancing with everyone while I play. We’re a good time. Hopefully everyone’s drinking and loosened up a bit nice and early. We’re going on at 8:30 so we’re getting it started!!

Cannedass: Do you have any shout outs upcoming shows?

Steve: ‘Yo Mom! What it is?!’… haha Um ...We’ve been working with Greg Bell out in Albany, he’s a big promoter and booking agent. He hooked us up with Biodiesel and that was a huge success! They’re a great band to play with just because they’re so developed and world renowned. I’m happy that Greg hooked us up with that. Also Deathwaltz Media Group from Philly hooked us up with a sweet 420 show at Triumph Brewery and we’re playing March 15th, next Thursday, with Psychedelphia.

Cannedass: Well that’s it folks. If you’re in the PA area check out one of the upcoming shows, If you’re Upstate get you’re ass out to Digital Friday at The Dry Dock in Newburgh! Check out the fb. Watch the blog. And as always…
