Tell a Tall Tale, Nathan (the talent), Dexter (bass), Ryan (guitar), and Larry
(stix), have been together for roughly four years and, I believe this years
Break contest is their third go at it. Last year they made it to the finals and
just barely lost it to their fellow 845 Entertainment artist, Greek. Not the
kind of kids to be told no or never they're hungrier than ever and ready to
pretty much bring down the house this Saturday at The Chance. There’s an 8pm
stage time, so get there around 7:00pm to have time to grab a drink with me
<3.
Tell
a Tall Tale is a fresh breathe of hip-hop. Infused with jazzy electric riffs
over intricate yet syncopated drumbeats, this is the best live hip-hop group to
hit the stage in years. While others were auto-tuning and figuring out how to
dub-step-out their tracks, Tell a Tall Tale were perfecting their sound and
it’s reflected in their incredibly professional self titled EP that was
released September 2011.
I
couldn’t get all the guys together for an official interview, but I did go to
see Greek at the Chance with Nate and we talked a bit on the car ride. I was
folding unlabeled burned cd’s into blank red sheets of paper in an origami
fashion, doing my part. I asked Nate if he wanted me to label them or anything,
“It doesn’t matter, I just want to get the music out there”, was his reply. It
made me smile because it was so earnest. One of the things I appreciate about
Nate and the content of his songs is their candor. He, as well as the rest of
the group, are from a small town called Washingtonville, in New York, and
though they are itching to get out of it they definitely rep it. As they
should, it’s this small town that brought together this dynamic group of
individuals who have managed to merge all of their personal styles into one
cohesive breathe of fresh hip-hop air.
Come
to the third times a charm show this Saturday February 4th. Stage
time is 8pm. Cheers time with Cannedass is 7pm. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15
at the door.
